Ailsa has been teaching wheel throwing and surface decoration for over 25 years upon graduating from Emily Carr College of Art and Design where she divided her studies in both the Painting and Ceramic Departments.
“The Painted Pot” is a comprehensive workshop focusing on various methods and techniques of surface decoration to develop one's own unique visual language through self-exploration and discovery.
Basic colour mixing and understanding of the colour wheel, use of underglaze paints, pastels and pencils, trailing with liner bottles, using brushes to achieve various mark making are techniques that will be covered.
Students will be encouraged to develop their own design using pattern, images or abstract expression as well as where to find inspiration and work through their own ideas to create a design composition for their pots.
Work can be done on either greenware or bisque ware. Drawing and painting skills are NOT required..
Students will come away from the workshop with the understanding of what imagery, style and method works best and feels right to them individually along with the skills and tools to begin creating their own unique style and way of working.
Rather than emulating another artist's work, students will create surface decoration, through the process of exploration and discovery, that authentically reflects who they are while having fun in the process.
With my admiration for Ailsa's form and surface design, and having taken her classes, she has become one of my strongest influences as a potter. Through her gift as an artist, her formal education, and her years of experience, she's been instrumental in helping me elevate my work to the next level. Without her continued guidance, I wouldn't be producing the work I am now. Robin
I thoroughly enjoyed taking Ailsa’s decorating workshop! She taught us very practical approaches to planning and implementing designs on our pottery. Most importantly, she shared a variety of decorating tools/techniques with us during the workshop . She also brought examples of her designs together with printed step-by-step instructions on how to mimic various design techniques. It was great to take home all the step-by-step instructions! Sheila
